April 2016 Newsletter

Below is a newsletter overview with some new website links:

We have two new videos that can be viewed at His Wheels Videos.

Alice will be a virtual judge for a Pakistan Accessible Design Challenge. You can learn about the competition at NOWPDP.org

In June we hope to send two trikes with Basic Utility Vehicles (BUV) to Tanzania. Learn more about BUV at Basic Utility Vehicle Website.

Our network around the world keeps growing. Maxim and his brother Evgenii began building a virtual handbike community in 2013 for a Russian Speaking audience within Eastern Europe. They have 425 members. Thanks to internet translation you can browse their website at Handbikes Russia.

Senior Capstone Project Presentation 2015

Today Kevin and Alice went to Olivet Nazarene University. There we heard the final presentation from our HWI Senior Design Team, which consisted of 3 mechanical engineer students: Loren, David and Alex. For their Senior Capstone Project they were given the challenge of coming up with cargo option for the His Wheels International Dual Offset Tube Trike. When they went to prototype the cargo design they received help from Sam, a 2nd year student. Great Job Loren, David and Alex on your exceptional work.

Olivet Nazarene University Trike Project Update

This update is from January 31, 2014. “ONU His Wheels Team has been making some progress after our long break.
Over the past 2 weeks, Ben and Britny have met a few times to take measurements of the trike to see where parts have room to be placed (i.e. motors, batteries, wiring, circuit board), and have designed a hopefully simple design for these. We have detached the hand pedals and the chain to free up the front end and are making plans to cut the front end soon to transform this into a caster wheel.

ONU Project Update

Today Kevin and Alice had a phone meeting with our Olivet Nazarene University engineering team. We reviewed the neuro trike project plan. Here is an update from one of the team members.

“This past week we were able to finish the Project Plan giving us a clear site of our objectives and what needs to be done now, so this will help us in moving forward hopefully quicker in the next few weeks. Brandon has been meeting every Wednesday with the Electrical Professor based on the coding aspect of the project, so that is moving along smoothly.

I have some exciting news on my end! This past weekend…I was able to attend the national SWE (Society of Women Engineers) conference in Maryland where I attended a mini-session on neurotechnology. The woman presenting this, …from Honeywell, explained some useful information pertaining to our project, and I got the honor of talking to her later and explaining what we are doing with His Wheels. She seemed impressed and thoroughly exciting for us and gave me two contacts who specialize in this subject and would be willing to answer any of our questions. This to me was a huge blessing and I am exciting to see how our project continues to unravel!”

Olivet Nazarene University’s Sr. Student Report

Here is the problem statement that four senior engineering students at Olivet Nazarene University (ONU) will work to solve over the next school year.

His Wheels has worked endlessly to improve its current trike model to be as user-friendly, cost-efficient, durable, and safe as possible. Though the hand-pedaled model serves a plethora of disabled people internationally, it still falls short in being able to mobilize quadriplegic or fully paralyzed clients. Due to a significant lack of funding, prior research regarding this topic has been primitive. Our group has thus been tasked with researching and developing a prototype and working model of an EEG technology which will power a visually evoked trike. The working trike should be able to mobilize fully paralyzed passengers based upon neurological, or electrochemical, cues. (more…)

Olivet—Engineer Meet

by Ife Alade
(Journalism Intern from Roosevelt University)

On Friday, Sept. 13, His Wheels Int’l took a road trip to Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais for a visit with the Engineering Department, and a meeting with its students.

Upon their arrival at the Reed Hall of Science Founder Alice Teisan and His wheels engineer, Kevin, were welcomed by Engineering Professors Ken Johnson and Mario Sanders. (more…)

Awesome Day at ONU

Today Kevin, Alice and our new journalism intern from Roosevelt University traveled to Olivet Nazarene University for a 9:30 meeting with four senior engineering students who will do a neuro-engineering project utilizing our trike. (more…)
